About this site and me I'm Bill Geddes, a retired social anthropologist. Over a fairly lengthy lifetime (an octogenarian) I have time and again been confronted by the need to understand and explain the impact of capitalism on the people and communities I have worked in and tried to understand. The ideas and information presented here are a product of that sixty year exploration. Nothing I say here should be considered the 'final word' or 'the answer' to any of the problems I address or issues I attempt to explain. My hope is that they will stimulate interested and concerned people to further explore and expand their own understanding of the nature, history and both social and environmental consequences of capitalism. I sincerely believe that unregulated internationalized capitalism, as it is practiced at the start of the 21st century, is inimical to the well-being of communities of people wherever they might live or whatever they might believe and understand about the world in which they live. Capitalism must be regulated and subordinated to the needs of communities. In the present global order, globalized capitalism has subordinated communities to its requirements and interests, effectively reducing them to a 'workforce' and 'consumer base' for its activities and products.
